Kim Acedo, Student and Teacher
Kim Acedo, a current student in Wellcoaches' 9-month intensive professional coach training program, specializes in working with women in midlife. Her journey into coaching began after a 14-year career as a fitness coach, primarily with the same demographic. While she initially focused on workouts and meal plans, an experience with a client revealed the importance of addressing the underlying reasons behind health behaviors. This realization led Kim to discover wellness coaching, recognizing that she already possessed coaching skills. She chose to study at Wellcoaches in 2013 and started her own coaching practice in 2014, continuing to focus on women in midlife, coaching them over the phone.
Kim feels a strong calling to work with women who have often prioritized caring for others over themselves. Her purpose extends to advancing gender equality by raising awareness of the harm of traditional gender roles and supporting women in leadership to avoid burnout. She attracts clients through referrals and by being present in women's spaces and events, emphasizing the importance of having a clear niche so potential clients feel directly addressed.

Chris Wang, Co-founder of Shimmer ADHD Coaching
In this episode of Wellcoaches Inside, Erika interviews Chris Wang, CEO of Shimmer, an organization providing coaching for teens and adults with ADHD. Chris is highlighted as a Wellcoaches health equity scholarship winner and a Forbes 30 under 30 honoree. The conversation delves into Chris' journey, starting with her diagnosis of ADHD at age 28, which she describes as an "expansion" rather than a limitation, allowing her to embrace her true self after years of masking. Driven by her personal experience and the lack of accessible support, Chris, along with Xenia, a Wellcoaches graduate and her initial ADHD coach, co-founded Shimmer to address the gaps in quality ADHD coaching. Shimmer's mission is to help every person with ADHD reach their full potential their way, emphasizing intersectionality, cultural competence, and affordability.
The discussion further explores Chris' sense of purpose, which she defines as making a positive impact in an area she is uniquely passionate about, aligning perfectly with her work at Shimmer.

Lauren Thomas, Professor and Coach
Lauren Thomas is an instructor at a two-year campus of the University of South Carolina in Lancaster, South Carolina. She teaches health education courses to young people, typically aged 18 to 22, who often come from rural communities and choose to live at home instead of residing at a four-year campus.
Before discovering Wellcoaches, Thomas was an educator who wanted to have meaningful conversations with her students but felt her methods were ineffective. She realized that she was unintentionally seeking to impress her students instead of building deep connections with them.
After going through coaching training with Wellcoaches, Thomas recognized the importance of authenticity and human dignity in her interactions with students. She sought to understand her students beyond their roles as nursing majors or student-athletes, helping them explore their identities and motivations.
Thomas emphasizes the possibility of burnout and disenchantment in any profession and encourages her students to find meaningful activities and practices to draw on their strengths. She sees her role as an educator as enhanced by her coaching skills, allowing her to connect with students on a deeper level. According to Thomas, becoming a faculty member coach has fundamentally changed her relationships with herself, her family, and her colleagues, bringing more compassion and joy into her life.
