Dissociation Part 2: What Happens Next?

    04.11.2026 | 43 min.
Dissociation Part 2: Going Deeper 🧠
In Part 2 of our conversation about dissociation, we’re going a little deeper.
How do we actually work out whether someone is experiencing dissociation? What does assessment look like, and what happens once we identify it?
We explore how clinicians assess dissociative experiences, what we’re looking for, and how to distinguish dissociation from other experiences that can sometimes look or feel similar. We then dive deeper into what can contribute to dissociation and, importantly, what we can actually do next.
A deeper, practical conversation about assessment, understanding dissociation, and moving beyond simply recognising the symptoms.

Where Did I Just Go? Intro To Dissociation

    28.10.2026 | 46 min.
    Dissociation: What Is It, Really?
Ever feel like you’re there… but not really there? Or like the world suddenly feels distant, dreamlike, or strangely unfamiliar?
In this episode of Wise Mind: A DBT Podcast, we’re diving into dissociation , what it actually is, why it happens, and what it can look and feel like.
We break down some of the common signs and symptoms of dissociation, including feeling disconnected from yourself or your surroundings, emotional numbness, “spacing out,” memory gaps, and experiences of depersonalisation or derealisation.
We also explore why dissociation can be a protective response, particularly when our brains and nervous systems are overwhelmed, and why understanding what’s happening can be an important first step towards responding with curiosity rather than fear.
No jargon, no diagnosing yourself from TikTok , just a practical, trauma- informed introduction to understanding dissociation.

    07.10.2026 | 47 min.
In Part 2, Maddy and Raich from Wise Mind are continuing the conversation around self-harm but this time, we’re getting practical. What do we do when someone isn’t ready to stop? We explore harm minimisation, how to support someone without judgement, and why meeting people where they’re at can be an important part of the work. We chat about what helpful support can actually look like, how to have these conversations safely, and how we can stay connected with someone even when they’re not ready to make a change!!
