How can the superyacht industry improve safety before something goes wrong?
In this episode of On The Bridge, Alicia Store, Chief Operating Officer at dsnm Ltd, speaks with Paul Shepherd, Chair of CHIRP’s superyacht programme, about confidential safety reporting, crew trust, shared learning, and the culture needed to help yacht crew speak up.
Paul explains what CHIRP is, why a superyacht-specific programme was created, and how crew can share safety concerns, near misses, incidents, and lessons learned without fear of being identified.
This is not a conversation about whistleblowing. It is a conversation about learning.
Paul makes clear that CHIRP is designed to take the same safety conversations that often happen in crew bars, WhatsApp groups, or private chats, and bring them into a confidential structure where the wider industry can learn from them. The aim is not to blame yachts, captains, crew, or management companies. The aim is to prevent the same mistakes from being repeated elsewhere.
Alicia and Paul also discuss some of the most common superyacht safety themes reported through CHIRP, including tender operations, anchoring and mooring, and working aloft. They explore why unsafe practices can become normal onboard simply because nothing has gone wrong yet, a process known as the normalisation of deviation.
From kill cords and life jackets in tenders to slippery surfaces, exposed work areas, stop work authority, and the importance of fresh eyes onboard, this conversation looks at the everyday decisions that shape safety culture.
Paul also highlights the positive side of the industry: the captains, chief officers, engineers, interior teams, deck crew, and shoreside professionals already trying to build better safety standards across yachting.

Superyacht ownership should be exceptional, but it should never be chaotic.
In this episode of Forward Watch, host Karine Rayson speaks with Jack MacNally of Foreland Marine about where yacht owners are most exposed during a purchase, build, refit, or ongoing operation, and why independent representation matters long before something goes wrong.
Jack is the co-founder of Foreland Marine Consultancy, an independent owner’s representative firm working only for the owner. He is also the author of The First Owner’s Reference, a guide created to help yacht owners ask the questions that are often missing from the glossy version of yacht ownership.
The conversation looks at one of the industry’s most uncomfortable realities: incentives.
A broker may recommend a surveyor. A surveyor may know the captain. A captain may recommend a yard. Everyone may look professional, polished, and experienced, but unless the owner understands who is being paid, who is connected, and where interests may overlap, the advice they receive may not be as independent as they believe.
Jack explains why transparency, disclosure, due diligence, and independent advice are essential when millions of dollars and multiple stakeholders are involved. He also discusses why owners should build their own team before entering the purchase process, including independent technical guidance, legal advice, survey support, and people who are genuinely sitting on their side of the table.
The discussion also moves beyond acquisition into the ongoing role of an owner’s representative. Jack explains why strong representation should not disappear once the deal is complete, and why operational oversight, crew-level awareness, management relationships, diplomacy, integrity, and long-term planning all matter to the success of the yacht.
