Is Mediation Normalization? On Mass Shootings, Shock, Recording, and Broadcasting

    02.11.2026 | 31 min.
In today’s episode, host Hannah Balber talks about gun violence in the United States with American visual artists and filmmakers Ryat Yezbick and Milo Talwani. Their project The Innocence of Unknowing is an AI-driven animation that interrogates how mass shootings are mediated, remembered, and normalised through news imagery. The project uses AI to analyse news media coverage of mass shootings in the United States since the 1960s. This immersive essay film - performed live by Ryat Yezbick, Milo Talwani, and the AI humanities scholar they built - examines our role as spectators of mass shootings while illustrating the history of the evolving media landscape.
