Seatember is back! And so is Emily! This time we set sail to Japan where we take a quick port stop in Japanese maritime folklore with sea dragons, whale cults and giant ocean monks (don't ask) before getting into the strange yet downright chilling folklore of the Funayūrei. These ships full of drowned sailors want one thing: to add to their crew by any means necessary (including using ladles to sink your ship). Tangents include live autopsies, some gushing about Widow's Bay, and why you shouldn't drive a Tesla through a cemetery.

A tiny plaque, carved from mammoth ivory was dated to around 30,000 BCE. On its surface, a human figure stands in a pose that some researchers believe represents the constellation Orion. Deep within caves from that same era, paintings depict other familiar celestial forms, like Taurus, occupying the ancient sky then just as they do now. While it is nearly impossible to trace the exact moment our ancestors first looked up and traced these glowing patterns of light, astrology grew directly out of their deep desire to understand the universe and read the will of the gods. Across the globe, early human cultures interpreted the sky through their own unique lenses - tying starry shapes to local flora and fauna, weaving them into existing folk legends, or building brand new myths around the shapes they saw.

This is the second of our Feminist History of Astrology with Niamh's bestie Megan. We recap the ancient astrology covered in Part 1 before getting into where it all went south, starting with the moral panic of the Witchcraft laws in Elizabethan England which led to the infamous Witch Trials, the discreditation of Astrology into a fringe pseudoscience practiced by the lower echelons of society, and right through to how it became reputedly the pasttime of bored houswives and gullible women and LGBTQIA+ people. We then navigate the sience behind both why people connect to astrology and the misconceptions held by the scientists who seek to discredit it.
