American Revolution Podcast

On the night of March 4, 1776, Continentals build defenses on Dorchester Heights, south of Boston. The work is so fast that it amazes the British. Gen. Howe decides they must evacuate Boston after the occupation. Howe's decision not to attack Dorchester, also means Washington does not execute a plan to storm Boston via a water landing that probably would have destroyed the Continental Army.

On February 17, 1776, the new Continental Navy commanded by Esek Hopkins and consisting of eight small ships sails out of Philadelphia with instructions to destroy the British Navy. Commander Hopkins realizes his orders are crazy and sails for the Bahamas instead.
