DELVE

In the season finale, Bryan Bruce meets the Ukrainian military commander who was defending Soledar when Andrew and fellow volunteer Christopher Parry went missing. With the help of a battlefield map, he explains how the two men ended up in Russian-held territory and what Wagner mercenaries likely did to them. Bryan also travels to the town of Bucha, where the brutality of Russia’s occupation and the slaughter of innocent civilians is brought into chilling focus, before going on to Dnipro where he interviews the prosecutor investigating Andrew’s death as a possible war crime. With new evidence, but still many unanswered questions, Bryan’s investigation takes another step towards finding the truth about Andrew’s murder.

Disturbing evidence about what happened to Andrew Bagshaw and Christopher Parry is uncovered, including that a Wagner mercenary was using Andrew’s phone shortly after he disappeared. Bryan then visits the Kyiv morgue, where the pathologist who examined Andrew’s body confirms he died from gunshot wounds and not an artillery strike, as his parents had initially been told. So where did that story come from? Was someone deliberately trying to shape the narrative before the truth could emerge?

Bryan Bruce travels to the Ukrainian frontline city of Kramatorsk, where Andrew lived before setting out on his final rescue mission. He visits the damaged apartment Andrew shared with fellow ‘hell jumper’, Philip York, and gets a glimpse into the life Andrew lived while carrying out extraordinary and dangerous work on the front line. He then meets one of the police officers who first investigated the disappearance of Andrew and fellow evacuator Christopher Parry, uncovering new details about the search for the missing men and their vehicles. The interview comes to an abrupt halt when a Russian drone buzzes overhead.

In Kyiv, locally based researcher, Taras Lazar, an associate professor turned war crimes investigator, arranges for Bruce to speak with the last people to be in contact with Andrew Bagshaw. Andrew and fellow ‘hell jumper’, British volunteer Christopher Parry, had been trying to rescue an elderly woman from Soledar when they failed to return. Through eyewitness accounts and a remarkable recording made as another hell jumper attempted to reach the stranded woman, Bruce pieces together what happened on this dangerous mission.
