Carl Jung - When Life Stops Making Sense
Carl Jung had a very rich perspective on life changes, seeing them not as random disruptions but as necessary steps in the deeper journey of the psyche.
🌱 Life Changes as Part of Individuation
Jung believed that each major shift in life—whether a crisis, loss, or transformation—was part of the process he called individuation, the lifelong journey of becoming whole.
These changes often bring up the unconscious and force us to confront hidden parts of ourselves (the shadow).
He saw difficulty not as punishment but as an invitation to growth.
“There is no coming to consciousness without pain.”
🔄 Crisis as Opportunity
Jung noted that many life changes (job loss, divorce, midlife transition) are accompanied by feelings of breakdown or despair.
But to him, such breakdowns are often the psyche’s way of demanding transformation.
He called midlife especially a crucial turning point, where the ego’s earlier goals (success, status) must yield to deeper meaning and connection with the Self.
🌀 The Role of the Unconscious
When life changes occur, the unconscious often surfaces through dreams, symbols, and synchronicities.
Jung encouraged people to pay attention to these signs, as they act as guides through transition.
Rather than resisting change, he urged an attitude of openness, trusting the deeper wisdom of the psyche.
🌌 Life Changes and the Self
Jung’s central teaching is that the Self (the inner wholeness) guides us through change.
When we let go of rigid ego control, life shifts—sometimes painfully—toward balance and integration.
He believed surrendering to this process aligns us with the greater order of the universe.
✅ In summary: Carl Jung taught that life changes are never meaningless. They are signals from the unconscious pushing us toward transformation, wholeness, and deeper connection with the Self. To him, change is not something to fear but something to engage with consciously, as it is the very path of growth.
